Stoke Climsland Parish

Children's Playground Improvement Project

INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT

Stoke Climsland Parish Council, in partnership with many interested parishioners, has embarked upon a project to replace and improve the equipment in the children’s playground on the Village Green.  The current facilities have been there for many years and are in such bad state that continued repair is no longer an option.  Take a look at the following photographs to get an idea of the way things are and why we feel the project is necessary (Clinking on the small image will bring up a larger one.  Use your browser 'back' button to return to this page).

It will be an expensive project as current safety standards, not just for the equipment but also the obligatory shock absorbing surfaces, are costly to satisfy.  Although the plans have not been finalised, the total cost will be in the region of £70000;  a large sum by any standards and it will take a lot of community effort to meet this target.  We will not get the £70000 from a single donor and getting donations from a variety of sources will be necessary.

WHAT ARE WE HOPING TO GET?

The funds raised will replace the existing play equipment with items which are modern, safe and fun to use.  Click on the following artist's impressions of what the new playground could contain.

Of course, what we will actually be able to provide will depend upon how successful we are at raising the necessary monies.  But the children of our local Primary School have very clear ideas about what they would like to see in the playground and we will do our very best to include as many of these as proves practicable.  We asked them to think about the design and they were prolific!  Take a look at the following examples of the drawings they sent to the Parish Council:

RAISING THE FUNDS

To co-ordinate these fundraising activities, a sub-committee has been formed and here are some details of the approaches we are pursuing.

  • We are making applications to various grant awarding bodies and are approaching local individuals and businesses for donations.

  • We are working with local groups and organisations that have an interest in children’s play activities and asking them to consider holding a fund-raising event.  Already the Scouts, Stoke Climsland School, the Sports and Social Club and the various Mums and Toddlers' groups are planning events.  All events will be advertised when the details are finalised.  When they are, please do your best to support them.

  • The Mets Rock Band (our local heroes!) and the Callington Singers have both agreed to hold fund-raising concerts - the latter is hoped to involve some children of the Primary School in the programme.

FUNDS RAISED SO FAR

As of 2nd April 2009 our total stands at £35636.72, as our Fund Raising Thermometer shows.  The major part of this comes from £23858 grant from North Cornwall District Council.  The remainder comes from donations by local organisations and individuals and the magnificent fund raising activities of our local school.

INTERNET SHOPPING

For those of you who use your internet connection for shopping, we are trying something completely different.  We have set up a fund-raising website through which you can access over 100 on-line retailers (including HMV, Amazon, Tesco, M & S etc) and, if you make any purchases through these, the playground project will get a donation.  The web address is www.buy.at/StokeClimslandPlaygroundFund  So, if you shop on-line, why not go through this site (or click below) and raise some money for a good cause at the same time?

GETTING INVOLVED

If you want more information on the project and/or want to make a donation and/or want to volunteer to help and/or want to suggest a fund raising event, please get in touch with Michael Cox on 370373 or Deri Parsons on 370319 or e-mail here.  Equally we'd like to hear from you if you can think of any potential sources of funds.  For example, do you think your employer might donate if approached? Or, perhaps you've heard of other similar projects which have been successful?  Any help and/or advice would be gratefully received.

Please support the Parish’s aim of providing modern, safe and fun play equipment for its children.
